Team Contests with Multiple Pairwise Battles∗
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study a contest between two teams. The teams include an equal number of players. Each player of a team participates in a component battle, competing against a matched rival from the other team. A team wins if and only if its players prevail in a suffi ciently large number of component battles. The winning team is awarded a prize, which is a public good for all its players. In addition, a player may receive a private reward by winning his own battle, regardless of the win or loss of his team. We demonstrate in an all-pay-auction setting that the “strategic-momentum effect” or “discouragement effect” identified in individual multi-battle contests does not appear in team contests. The outcomes of past battles do not distort the stochastic outcomes of future plays. In addition, neither the bidding effi ciency nor the stochastic outcome of the contest depends on the temporal structure of the contest, i.e., the sequencing or clustering of component battles, or the prevailing information disclosure and feedback policy. These results yield rich implications for contest design and policy experimentation. The main results and their logic remain valid in a wide array of alternative settings. JEL Nos: C7, D7

Success breeds successor Pride goes before a fall?1 Teams and Individuals in Best-of-Three Contests
We study the impact of progress feedback in team-production contests, in which each team member is solely responsible for one part of the production task. Particularly, we employ a real-e¤ort laboratory experiment to examine how team members react to the feedback in team-based (best-ofthree) contests and whether it di¤ers from that of individual-based (best-ofthree) contests. Our data corrobora...

In a multi-battle contest, each time a player competes by investing some of her budgets or resources in a component battle to collect a value if winning the battle. There are multiple battles to fight, and the budgets get consumed over time. The final winner in the overall contest is the one who first reaches some amount of total value. Examples include R & D races, sports competition, election...

Motivated by this phenomenon, this research investigates how the social network structure of a vi...
متن کاملIs There No ‘I’ in Team? Rational Players in Dynamic Team Competition∗
Empirical literature consistently challenges the rationality assumption of individuals’ behaviour in dynamic situations and in teamwork environments. Here I examine rational forward-looking behaviour in a dynamic team competition with multi-period “battles”. Using field data from professional squash team tournaments (820 matches), I provide evidence consistent with the game-theoretical predicti...
